Generally two types of Stainless Steel metal-Drilling Screws, they are –
a. Self-Drilling Screws, which are used for timber
b. Steel Tek Screws made of Stainless steel.
These screws are meant to self-drill. There are numerous physical types obtainable and they have their own pros and cons. It is very important to find the right metal for your application. Stainless Steel metal-Drilling Screws are generally obtainable in various types of metals, they are:-
i. Bi-Metal Self Drilling Screws – These are not entirely stainless screws. This category is usually made of 304 Stainless Steel body. They are very firm and ideal for piercing but they are not made of hundred percent Stainless Steel.
ii. 410 Stainless Steel Self Drilling Screws – These screws are made of 100% stainless steel. This particular type is Martensitic Stainless Steel and they can be toughened by treating them in heat. These screws are excellent for drilling. However, they have erosion resistance power compared to Type 304.
iii. 304 and 316 Stainless Steel Self Drilling Screws – It is not possible to harden these screws by applying heat treatment, as they are of Austenitic crystal structure. They have fantastic resistance power against corrosion.
iv. Hardtec/Martuex Stainless Steel – Both ‘Marutex’and ‘Hardtec’ types of Stainless Steel screws are made precisely as drilling screws. Heat treatment is applied to them to make them tougher, and they can drill through metals quite easily. With the help of Salt Spray tests, it is seen that their corrosion resistance capability is better than Type 304. They are not far behind of Type 316 either.
